As we gather to celebrate the history and community spirit of Rexburg's beloved Tabernacle, we must also acknowledge the challenges it faces. This iconic 115 year old building, has withstood the test of time, but it requires all of our attention.
Nearly 50 years ago, the Teton Dam Flood left a mark on our community and significantly damaged this treasured structure. While the City was able to bring it back to code after purchasing it a few years later, the necessary full restoration was never completed due to budget constraints.
🛠️ Today, we find ourselves at a similar crossroads. The Tabernacle is in need of critical upgrades, including ADA accessibility improvements, extensive plumbing renovations, bathroom repairs, crucial structural enhancements, heating and cooling system upgrades, and more. 🛠️
Your awareness is vital in our efforts to restore this historic building as we work to preserve the Tabernacle and help ensure that it serves our community's social needs moving forward for many years to come.

🌟 Fun fact: Did you know the Museum of Rexburg had a home before the Tabernacle? The museum originally opened on College Avenue in March 1970, thanks to the efforts of the Upper Snake River Valley Historical Society! 🎉 This museum became a treasure trove of local history, showcasing donations and captivating visitors with stories from our past. However, when the Teton Flood hit in 1976, the museum closed, later finding a new home in the basement of the Tabernacle in 1981, dedicating itself to the commemoration of the flood. 🏛️ In 2016, the museum expanded its offerings to once again share stories about the pioneers of Rexburg's past in addition to the impact of the flood. In December of 2023, the museum closed its doors to prepare for the restoration of the Tabernacle. What repairs are needed at the Tabernacle that caused the museum to lose its home? 🌟 The Rexburg Tabernacle has hosted a tapestry of stories woven throughout its history, each memory like the stitch of a quilt represented in our annual quilt show each March. What is your favorite memory of the building? 🌟 With long linneages residing in Rexburg, perhaps you have a story about the building's past? Or more entrenched in the community, the building has been a cornerstone of local gatherings for over a century. A multitude of events have taken place there including music performances, graduations, interfaith holiday pageants, and political speeches. In 1913, the lawn was the central gathering place for the formation of Madison County. The County notes "...over five thousand people attended. A big barbecue was served consisting of two steers, six pigs, six lambs, and two thousand loaves of bread." Come take a trip down memory lane with us. 💡✨💡✨💡 Perhaps you were moved by a speech or performance by a national figure like Frank Church, Evan McMullin, or Matt and Savannah Shaw? Maybe a local showcase by one of our choirs, symphonies, or orchestras created an unforgettable scene? 🎤🎶 Once upon a time, the basement hosted baptisms, dances, and band recitals. In the 80's it served as a home for the Teton Dam Flood Museum, which closed in late 2023 for the building's renovation. In more recent times, our annual OkTUBERfest and the Robinson Family Light Show both garnered local recognition as "Hallmark Channel-worthy celebrations!" Each memory contributes to the rich tapestry of our shared history. 🌄🏛️ **Do you know the hiStory (see what we did there?) behind the stones on the Rexburg Tabernacle?** 🏛️🌄
The size and number of stones on the structure leads one to wonder...how did those contractors manage to get the job done back in 1911? Well, the answer is...with tremendous effort.
The gray stones (believed to be mostly sedimentary limestone) were sourced near the Webster dry farms, approximately 4 miles east of Rexburg. The lighter stones (believed to be mostly volcanic rhyolite) found around the trim, windows, and doors came from the Sunnydell-Archer area quarries, about 10 miles south of Rexburg. In March of 1911, they used large heavy-duty horse-drawn wagons to haul over 140 cords (about 560,000 pounds) of stone to the building site. At that time, the project had been signed, but a bid had not yet even been put up for construction!
Two months later, on May 25th of that year, contractor bids were due. The very next day F.L. McGrew of St. Anthony, with the lowest bid of $19,808, was awarded the job and one more day later shovels hit the dirt for the first time, marking the official groundbreaking of the site. Eli McEntire is credited with the stonework around the building, which held its opening ceremony just 7 months and 5 days later.

Our 1911 Tabernacle Civic Center needs significant restoration. The renovations began in 2024 and will continue over the next several years. This 1911 landmark is a standing icon of the legacy of our community, thus, the Tabernacle Legacy Campaign was born. We'll continue to share more information about the story of this icon and campaign. Stay tuned!

Imagine for a moment... The year is 1911. There are no motorized vehicles. No motorized machines. No electrical tools or any of today's modern conveniences. In that year, working in those conditions, while also dealing with inconveniences like weather and other hazards, a team of citizens came together to build the Rexburg Tabernacle in ONLY 8 MONTHS! This feat is noteworthy for many reasons, but its completion is a testament to the community and legacy of the building that is Still Standing here in Rexburg over a century later. We'll be sharing this story and more over the next few weeks. Heads Up Rexburg! STREET CLOSURE ALERT!
W 2nd N will be closed between S 1st W & S 3rd W on Saturday, 11/30, from 4-10 pm for the Christmas Lights and Holiday Nights event. We anticipate increased pedestrian traffic and would like to grant the holiday carriages safer street access.
**This includes the intersection at S 2nd W. Vehicles who approach this intersection will be instructed to do a U-turn.

You Guys!!! Today is the Day! The Lights turn on at 6 pm following our tree lighting at 5:30! Have you seen the tree in Porter Park? It's HUGE! 75 feet tall!!! Ok...so we couldn't get lights allll the way to the top of the tree, but we all worked hard to get it as lit as we could! So come light the night with us and dance to the tunes of the season! We'll all be "dancin' merrily In the new old-fashioned way!”
